SnapMind
Privacy Policy
SnapMind reads screenshots you allow, on your phone, so you can search the words on them. That text stays on your phone. The home screen shows a Google banner ad. The ad uses advertising data, not the words from your screenshots.
This Privacy Policy describes how Thanapat Wongchalermthan (“we”, “us”) handles information in the Android app SnapMind. It applies only to this app.
1. Who we are
SnapMind is a private index for screenshots already on your phone. It files each screenshot and lets you search the words in the image. For privacy questions, contact pat23.w@gmail.com.
2. Information stored on your device
SnapMind does not operate a cloud account. The search index is stored only in the app’s private storage on this phone. The screenshot files stay in your gallery (Android MediaStore) or at the location you picked. SnapMind keeps a reference to each image so it can show it again. It does not copy a second photo library.
For a screenshot you allow the app to read, the local index can include:
- A reference to the image (its content address and file name) and when it was added
- Text recognized on the image, used for search
- A category, title, amount, date, and place read from that text
- The contents of a QR code or barcode, when one is present
- Whether you marked the screenshot as a wishlist item
- The status of on-device categorization described in section 4
Password, passcode, and one-time-code screens are treated as private. SnapMind stores a hidden placeholder instead of the text on those screens. That text is not written into the database and is not searchable.
3. Information we do not collect ourselves
We do not run a backend that receives your screenshots, recognized text, categories, amounts, QR contents, or wishlist marks. We do not sell that information. There is no SnapMind account. Screenshot text is not part of the ad request.
Installing SnapMind from Google Play is a transaction with Google. Google’s own privacy policy applies to your Play account, purchases, and store activity. That is separate from the index SnapMind keeps on your phone.
4. Processing on your phone
SnapMind reads text and barcodes on the device. Category, title, amount, date, and place are filled in on the device from that text.
On a phone that already includes Gemini Nano, SnapMind may ask that on-device model once to suggest a category when the built-in rules do not recognize the screenshot. The text used for that step stays on the phone. SnapMind does not send it to a SnapMind server or to a cloud AI service. A phone without that model still keeps a searchable record.
A QR or barcode payload is saved in the local index. It opens in another app only after you confirm. The app you open then handles that link under its own policy.
5. Permissions
Depending on your Android version and what you allow, SnapMind may request:
- Photos (
READ_MEDIA_IMAGESon Android 13 and newer) so it can watch your Screenshots folder and index new screenshots - On Android 12 and below, storage (
READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE) for the same purpose - Notifications (
POST_NOTIFICATIONS) so a reminder you set can appear
Broad photo access is used to index new screenshots as you take them. The system photo picker selects images once and cannot watch the Screenshots folder. If you decline broad access, you can pick individual screenshots instead, and SnapMind indexes only those. You can revoke photo or notification access in Android settings.
The app also uses:
- Internet and network state, so the home-screen banner can load
- Advertising ID, used by Google’s advertising libraries
Indexing a screenshot does not need a network connection. The banner does.
6. Reminders
If a flight or ticket screenshot has a clear future date, you can tap “Remind me a day before.” The reminder is scheduled on this phone. The notification shows the screenshot title. SnapMind does not send that reminder through a server. Nothing is scheduled until you tap.
7. Advertising
SnapMind shows one banner ad on the home screen, served by Google AdMob. Google and its advertising partners may collect and use:
- Advertising ID and other device or app identifiers
- IP address, which can be used to estimate approximate location
- App interactions such as opening the app and taps related to the ad
- Diagnostic information about the ad SDK, such as performance and stability
This is used for advertising, measurement, and fraud prevention. It is handled by Google under Google’s Privacy Policy and AdMob & privacy. You can delete or reset your advertising ID in Android settings, under Privacy and then Ads.
The words, amounts, and QR contents read from your screenshots are not sent with the ad request.
8. Device backups
Android backup and device-to-device transfer are turned off for SnapMind’s private storage. The index is not copied to Google Drive by this app. Hidden sign-in text is not written into the index at all.
Screenshots in your gallery follow your device’s photo backup settings, which are outside this app.
9. Data retention and deletion
The local index remains on your device until you clear the app’s storage in Android settings or uninstall the app. Uninstalling removes the index from the device, unless a device backup you keep still holds a copy. Screenshots stay in your gallery until you delete them there.
Because we do not hold a copy of your screenshots or index on our servers, there is no SnapMind-side dataset to delete. To ask about data, email pat23.w@gmail.com. Advertising data held by Google is covered by Google’s policy. Deleting your advertising ID in Android settings stops that identifier from being used going forward.
10. Children’s privacy
SnapMind is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). The banner is not a child-directed ad. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children through a SnapMind server.
11. International users
The screenshot index is created and kept on your phone. We do not transfer that text to our own servers. Google may process advertising data on servers outside your country, under Google’s privacy policy.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when the app’s practices change. The effective date at the top will be revised when we do. The current version is published at https://immrpat.github.io/snapmind-privacy-policy/.
